Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Welcomes Michael Glen Ambassador of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and First Paralyzed Hot Air Balloon Pilot in the World
4/15/2013
Roswell, NM – Eastern New Mexico Medical Center is proud to welcome Michael Glen, Ambassador of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and first paralyzed hot air balloon pilot in the world to speak to our staff, patients and community.
The son of two public school teachers, Bill and Susie, Glen was raised in Roswell, New Mexico, with his brother, Chris. Glen grew up an athlete with a thirst for challenge. Two months after his 21st birthday, he was involved in a single car rollover. He was immediately rushed to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center where nurses and doctors stabilized him and prepared him to be air lifted to Albuquerque for further treatment. After months of hospitals beds, therapies and medications, Glen returned home alive but paralyzed from the waist down with a spinal cord injury.
Glen’s father has been involved in ballooning since 1973 so it seemed natural that Michael would follow in his footsteps. Nearly 10 years later, despite all the physical and mental challenges, Glen accomplished his lifelong dream of becoming a balloon pilot and the 1st paralyzed hot air balloon pilot in the world.
During the week of May 12th-18th, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center will celebrate hospital week by recognizing the employees, physicians and volunteers that touches the lives of our friends and families in so many ways – alleviating fears, saving lives, easing pain and offering compassionate care every day. And to help us celebrate, Glen has come back to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center where this journey of his life began to say thank you with his words of encouragement and wisdom. “Although some might consider a spinal cord injury the end of their dreams, for me it was just the beginning of fulfilling mine.” Glen commented.
The public is welcome to join us to hear Michael Glen speak on:
Friday, May 3rd from 10-11 am in the ENMMC Cafeteria
